Ingredients
Cake flour – this isn’t really a ‘thing’ in Australia, but the equivalent is as follows:
- 1 cup cake flour = 1 cup plain flour less 2 tbsp, replaced with 2tbsp cornflour
Eggs – the eggs I typically use are around 60g including the shell.
Terms / translations:
- Biscuits = cookies (always)
- Caster sugar = superfine sugar
- Icing sugar (pure or mixture) = confectioner’s sugar, powdered sugar
- Sugar = granulated sugar
- Plain flour = all purpose flour
- Icing = frosting
- Bi-carb soda = baking soda
- Desiccated coconut = shredded coconut
- Cornflour = corn starch
- Rice flour = ground rice
- Full cream milk = whole milk
- Light milk = 2% milk
- Skim milk = fat-free /non-fat milk
- Baking paper = parchment paper
- Sieve = strainer
- Sieve = sift
- Greaseproof paper = wax paper
- Glacé = candied
- Mixed peel = candied peel
- Sultanas = golden raisins
- Cling film/wrap = Saranplastic wrap
- Plain biscuits = any plain, sweet cookie
- Wheatmeal/digestive biscuits = graham crackers
- Saladas = saltines
- Rice bubbles = rice crispies
- Pastry case = pie shell
- Grill = broil
- Hundreds and Thousands / 100s & 1000s = sprinkles, non pareils
- Sprinkles = strands, dragees
- Jelly = jello
- Jelly crystals = flavoured gelatin
- Jam = jelly
- Golden syrup = similar to light corn syrup, but darkish in colour
- Glucose syrup = light corn syrup
- Treacle = molasses
- Lolly/lollies = candy/candies, sweets
- Mince = ground meat
- Tomato sauce = ketchup
- Tomato puree = tomato sauce
- Roast = bake
- Soft drink = soda, pop
- Tasty cheese = cheddar cheese
- Coriander = cilantro
- Rocket = arugula
- Whipping / double cream = heavy cream
- Single cream = light cream, half-and-half
- Zucchini = courgette
- Capsicum = bell pepper
- Sweet potato = kumera
- Chips = french fries
- Chips = crisps, potato chips
- Stone, seed, pip = pit
- Devon, empire = bologna
- Spring onion = scallion
- Spanish onion = red onion
- Shallots = green onions
- Ice block, icy pole = popsicle
- Wholemeal = whole wheat
